Only Irritated Oysters……

Only Irritated Oysters ……

Reader – Ask yourself – What do irritated oysters produce? Of course … pearls.

There comes a time when we have to question what is happening. The trigger may be the economy, politics, education, or a world crisis.

When you get irritated by what you see, do you stop, think and take action? This is the “pearl” we hope you will produce.

Over the next few months, Lorraine Decker will share with you her “irritations”, and hopefully, they will produce pearls for you.

April 15, 2024:

Texas Legislature mandated that every high school student must take either Economics, an old course, or a new Personal Financial Literacy & Economics to graduate.

Sounds like a good idea.

Don Reiser, a friend, always said, “The devil is in the details!”

Did you know the following?

  1. Some districts will put the new course in the catalog but not make it available to the students. It’s offered but no one selected it!
  2. Some districts plan on saving money. Although your tax dollars pay for instructional materials that have been written by publishers, reviewed, approved, and vetted by the State Board of Education, a year-long process, districts are telling teachers that they must develop a course. Irritated? People teaching Math, Science, English, and History have taken these subjects in college. They have been trained in the subject matter and still the outcomes could always be better. What credentials do the teachers have to author a personal financial literacy course? Even with professional materials, motivating students to accept responsibility for the future and achieve life goals will be a challenge for many teachers. Don’t students and teachers deserve professionally authored materials to have an opportunity to succeed in the future?
  3. Finally, with the challenges young adults will face, they need more than compound interest or how to open a credit card. They need a foundation of critical thinking, planning, and problem-solving to create goals and design a written 10-year life plan that is calibrated to reality. Without the above, major mistakes will be made, and future employment, as a result of not knowing how to manage AI, will be in jeopardy.

IRRITATED?  – Take Action. Tell other parents what you have learned. Ask to see the materials your district will use. Would they motivate you?? Talk with school board members and your high school students. Will they prepare your child for success in the 21st Century?
